THANKSGIVING FIRE CLAIMS THE LIFE OF A CENTRAL LOUISIANA MAN
November 28, 2008
Hessmer Louisiana, State Fire Marshal H. Butch Browning announced that a Thanksgiving morning residential trailer fire claimed the life of a Hessmer man, despite rescue efforts by his father to save him.
The Hessmer Fire Department was called at 07:52am, Thanksgiving morning to a house trailer located at 144 Wellington Court, Bunkie LA. This is located in a rural area between Hessmer and Bunkie, LA. Upon their arrival the entire living room of the trailer was burning and it was discovered that Ronald Johnson Jr. (DOB) 6-18-82 had been in the fire and was trapped. His father Ronald Johnson Sr. who discovered the fire was able to remove him from a bedroom window. First Responders rendered emergency care and Ronald Johnson Jr. was transported to Bunkie General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Preliminary findings indicate smoke inhalation as the cause of death; the Coroner will release final findings at a later time.
Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office were called to determine the cause of this fire and found no evidence of intentional causes. The fire did start in the living room and the investigation is continuing but most of the evidence at this time indicate an electrical appliance or wiring as the possible cause. The home did have a hard wired smoke detector installed and information at this time indicates it had been tested recently but it is unknown if it gave an audible warning of the initial fire. Mr. Johnson was home alone and later arriving witnesses could not confirm hearing the alarm sound.
Fire Marshal Butch Browning sends the office’s deep sympathy and blessings to the Johnson family. “Loss of life to fire is terrible but when it occurs on the morning of Thanksgiving we all hurt even more”, Browning said. He further stated, “We will do everything in our power to assist the family in understanding what caused this fire and also to help educate others in our State so they will not to be a victim of fire”.
