Man Dies in Crash While Fleeing from Zwolle Police
January 28, 2009
A Converse man, who apparently was being pursued for a speeding violation, dies after crashing his vehicle. Sabine Parish Deputy Coroner Ron Rivers identified the victim as matthew McCoy, 20. McCoy was pronounced dead at Sabine Medical Cetner shortly after the 10:30pm crash. Zwolle Police Chief Marvin Frazier didn’t return a phone call Tuesday morning seeking additional information about the fatality. State police did not ivestigate the crash, Troop E spokesman Scott Moreau said in an email to The Times. Information that Rivers received about McCoy’s death indicates McCoy was pursued by Zwolle police officer Roman Mannagan onto Old Pleasant Hill Highway. McCoy, who was traveling east, appears to have lost control in a curve. His vehicle rolled over, and McCoy was ejected about 109 feet. Another Zwolle police officer, Jackson Jones, investigated the crash, which occurred outside of the town’s corporate limits.

Two-Year old dies in ruston house fire
BATON ROUGE, 01/27/09 — State Fire Marshal H. Butch Browning announced this afternoon that a house fire Monday evening in Ruston claimed the life of a two-year old resident of the dwelling. Six others escaped the blaze. The Ruston Fire Department requested the assistance of the State Fire Marshal in determining the cause of the fatal fire.
The Ruston Fire Department and Lincoln Parish fire responded to the fire at 324 W Vaughn Ave. in Ruston at 6:15 P.M. Monday evening (1/26/09). Six other residents of the home, two adults and four children under the age of four, were able to exit the house and were outside upon the fire departments’ arrival. Firefighters found the victim, Nakhia Ellis, 10/31/06, in the front bedroom of the house.
The victim’s mother, Tiffany Jenkins, 22, was watching her children as well as those of her sister, Candra Jenkins, who is the leaseholder of the home. Ms. Jenkins and the five children were in a front bedroom, while Roy Jenkins, 52, an uncle, was asleep in a rear bedroom. Ms. Jenkins smelled smoke and went into the living room to investigate and saw that the dining room, which was being used as a play area, was totally involved in flames. She woke her uncle up and then put two toddlers in strollers and brought them outside. She returned to the door of the house and was met with what she initially thought was the remainder of the children, whom she walked to the area of the road. When she realized that her two-year old daughter was missing from the group, the fire had become too great to re-enter the home. Roy Jenkins escaped the home through a rear window.
Fire Marshal investigators have determined that the fire did originate in the dining/play area of the home, however the specific cause of the fire has not been determined as of this time. The home, a single family residence, was not equipped with smoke detectors. The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.
