Louisiana’s First Neighborhood Place Opens in Sabine Parish

June 26, 2009

The grand opening of Louisiana’s first Neighborhood Place will be held in Many by the state agencies and community members that make up the Sabine Parish Neighborhood Place partnership at 11:30 a.m. on Monday June 29. It will take place at Neighborhood Place - South, 910 West Mississippi Avenue, Many (Ceremony to be held in the SPARK school cafeteria)

Neighborhood Place provides critical services to community residents in a new way. Through Neighborhood Place, the state departments of Social Services, Health and Hospitals, Education, the Louisiana Workforce Commission and the Office of Juvenile Justice work as a team with local providers to offer better, more accessible services to clients because they are located under one roof.
Speakers and dignitaries in attendance will include:

  • Kristy Nichols, DSS secretary
  • Charles Castille, DHH undersecretary
  • Tim Barfield, executive director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission
  • Dr. Mary Livers, OJJ deputy secretary
  • Donna Nola-Ganey, DOE assistant superintendent for the Office of School and Community Support
  • The Honorable Gerald Long, Louisiana State Senator
  • Mayor Kenneth Freeman, Town of Many
  • Mayor Roger Lopez, Town of Zwolle
  • Representatives of Sabine Parish School District
  • Community Partners

In 2008, Governor Bobby Jindal signed Act 775, which directed the five state departments — the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Hospitals, the Department of Social Services, the Louisiana Workforce Commission and the Office of Juvenile Justice to work with Sabine Parish communities and local service providers to implement Neighborhood Place.

Neighborhood Place services focus on the critical areas of student achievement, health care, social services, workforce and juvenile justice services. By working as a team, participating agencies can coordinate and adapt services to best meet a client or a family’s individual needs.

To apply for services before Neighborhood Place, families and clients had to travel from all parts of rural Sabine Parish to a number of different offices, which made the process lengthy and inefficient.
