NSU to switch to Federal Direct Loan Program

March 31, 2010

Northwestern State University will no longer process Stafford and PLUS loans through lenders in the Federal Family Education Loan Program at the end of the Spring 2010 semester. Beginning with the Summer 2010 semester, Stafford and Parent PLUS Loans for NSU students will be funded by the Federal Direct Loan Program.

“Offering loans exclusively through the Federal Direct Loan Program will save money for students and their families and simplify the loan process,” said NSU Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Lisa Abney.  “This program will also provide access to a stable and predictable source of funding many of our students need to obtain their education.”

Federal Stafford loans are fixed-rate student loans for undergraduate and graduate students attending college at least half-time. Stafford loans are the most common and one of the lowest-cost ways to pay for school. The Parent PLUS loan is a low interest student loan for parents of undergraduate, dependent students. With a Parent PLUS loan, families can fund the entire cost of a child’s education (less other financial aid).

According to Northwestern Director of Enrollment Management Dr. Mary Edith Stacy, recent volatility in the national credit markets and reductions in subsidies to lenders have made it more difficult and expensive to obtain a student loan from a private lender.

“A number of lenders have gotten out of the student loan market,” said Stacy. “Some lenders have stopped offering various discounts or incentives which has made borrowing more expensive. After extensive research, the university concluded borrowing directly from the federal government through the Federal Direct Loan Program would be the better program for students and their families.”

Approximately 42 percent of Northwestern students received Stafford or Parent Plus loans last fall.

NSU to host regional dance conference April 7-10

March 30, 2010

Northwestern State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will host the American College Dance Festival Association’s South Central Conference April 7-10.

The Conference features a wide variety of dance performances and presentations that are open to the public on campus and around Natchitoches. More than 600 dance students and faculty from nearly 40 colleges and universities will attend. This is the first time in nearly 20 years the regional conference has been held in Louisiana.

“We are fortunate to have a roster of internationally recognized dance artists who will be providing student choreographers feedback on their dances, creating site-specific works for the students for performances around town, and teaching master classes,” said Barry Stoneking, director of dance at NSU.

“ACDFA has been the preeminent collegiate dance organization for more than 25 years now, and its conferences provide students exposure to ideas, dance forms, and choreography they might otherwise not have access to in their region,” said Assistant Professor of Dance Joshua Legg.

According to Stoneking, some approaches to the choreography will be familiar to area dance audiences. He said in addition to concert dance, some of the works would incorporate traditional Latin American folk dances, while others might highlight more cutting-edge ideas.

“The site-specific works created at locations around town will be an exciting addition to what we normally think of as dance,” said Stoneking. “For Natchitoches, the Conference gives residents the opportunity to view a broad spectrum of dance by students and master choreographers alike.”

Free public events include a Dance on Film screening commemorating Shreveport native Talley Beatty’s groundbreaking contribution to dance cinema on Saturday, April 10 at 2:45 p.m.

“Beatty was a renowned dancer and choreographer,” said Stoneking. “He was one of the first really significant African-American male dancers, and he made major contributions to jazz and modern dance choreography as well. Among other things, Beatty was really the first dance maker to create choreography specifically for film as art in its own right, rather than creating dance to support a movie musical. His collaboration with legendary filmmaker Maya Deren, ‘A Study in Choreography for the Camera,’ is credited as the first work of its kind. Together they created an entirely unique genre of art.”

The black and white silent film is four minutes long. In addition to a screening of the Deren-Beatty collaboration, the Dance for Film screening will feature original works by participating faculty and students from the ACDFA Conference.

Informal outdoor performances will be held on campus Thursday at 11:30 p.m. Friday at 11:30 p.m. and Saturday at 11:15 p.m. A showing of site-specific works commissioned for the Conference will be presented on Saturday at 5 p.m. throughout downtown Natchitoches.

Ticketed events include preliminary adjudicated concerts where student, faculty and guest choreographers will receive public feedback from distinguished judges. Adjudicated concerts are $5 general admission and will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and Thursday and Friday at 1:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets for Saturday evening’s Gala Concert at 8 p.m. are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. The adjudicated concerts and the Gala Concert will be presented in NSU’s A.A. Fredericks Auditorium, and tickets will be available at the door.
