Lighting project at NSU improves safety, saves money
December 28, 2011
NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State University is completing a campus-wide lightingproject that will improve campus safety while lowering energy costs. The $380,000 project is being made possible through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funding awarded to the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources.
According to Director of Physical Plant Operations Chuck Bourg,
the project is part of a partnership with Sylvania Lighting Services using LED chips with a Sylvania D6-fixture.
“We are part of a case study with Sylvania Lighting Services and are the first to use this type of technology,” said Bourg. “The new technology uses less energy to power the fixture as well as enhance the foot candles for greater output. We will work together to determine the differences inlighting and energy usage between the old fixtures and the new ones.”
Bourg says the new fixtures may be able to more than double the lighting at cutting energy consumption in half.
“Northwestern State is working to be a greener campus and reducing our energy usage is one way to meet that goal,” said Bourg.
The lighting project began late last summer. During the Thanksgiving holidays, workers replaced 333 of the old antique-style acorn-type fixtures. Over the next few weeks, the remaining 47 fixtures will be replaced.
The new lights are incredible and increase visibility and studentsafety on campus,” said Northwestern State Student Government Association President Tara Luck. “I think they will help with many if the security issues I have been fighting so hard to help resolve.”
As part of the case study, before and after photos are being taken of the fixtures. Bourg said the photos would be used to determine where additional lighting is needed to enhance safety on campus as well as where lighting may need to be replaced. Early next year, Northwestern State will start replacing all interior lights in each academic building. The university is considering using occupancy sensors for lighting controls in each facility, according to Bourg.
The LED lighting project was among three energy-saving projects at Northwestern State funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. NSU’s Shreveport campus received improvements to its heating and air conditioning system at a cost of $380,000. An auxiliarychiller was installed at Prather Coliseum at a cost of $180,000. Bourg saidboth projects would yield significant energy savings to the university.
Two Northwestern State students honored for work with orientation program
December 28, 2011
NATCHITOCHES – Two Northwestern State University students were honored for their work with the annual Freshman Connection program. Anna Gasperecz of Baton Rouge was named outstanding connector and Kiley Louviere of Houma was chosen as outstanding volunteer. Fellow students who worked in the program chose each.
Freshman Connection is designed to assist incoming freshman at Northwestern State with the transition to university life. While on campus, participants meet with an academic advisor, register for classes, learn about campus resources and meet future classmates.
Incoming freshmen are introduced to the academic programs and services provided by the University, such as academic advising and support services. Upon completing the registration process at Freshman Connection, those who attend are prepared for their first semester in college.
“I was really honored, “ said Gasperecz, a sophomore hospitality management and tourism major from Baton Rouge. “It was something I never expected. My goal was to have an impact on one person and help them get off to a good start. If I could do that, I would feel I did my job well.”
Gasperecz said the size of the Northwestern State campus makes it easy for freshmen to get acclimated.
“I love the size of the Northwestern campus,” she said. “The teachers here know you. They know if you are in class or not. When you walk to class, you always see someone you know. This is a place where everyone can feel comfortable.”
She is a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority where she serves as recruitment director. Gasperecz is a member of Sigma Lambda Honor Society and Demon Volunteers in Progress.
Louviere was asked to fill in as Freshman Connection coordinator at the last minute due to conflicts.
“My job was to do a lot of things behind the scenes that people don’t see like picking up tables or boxes and making sure equipment works, “ said Louviere, a junior psychology major from Houma. “A lot of people have to work together for Freshman Connection to go smoothly.”
Louviere was president of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and was a member of Demon Volunteers in Progress.
“Getting in Demon Volunteers in Progress helped me get my foot in the door as far asgetting involved in extracurricular activities,” said Louviere. “It led to a lot of other opportunities.”
Louviere was also a Freshman Connection orientation leader and will be coordinator this summer.

Cade Brumley pens Leadership Book
December 27, 2011
NATCHITOCHES - Dr. Cade Brumley, a graduate of Northwestern State University
and assistant superintendent of DeSoto Parish schools, has written a book
entitled Leadership Standards in Action: The School Principal a
Servant-Leader.
“While America’s classroom teachers are where the rubber meets the road for
individual students, our school principals play the most important role in
whole-school effectiveness,” Brumley said. “When I see principals with the
appropriate school leadership characteristics, I also see schools doing well
despite their challenges and obstacles.”
Leadership Standards for Action: The School Principal as Servant-Leader is a
resource for aspiring principals, practicing principals, district leadership
and university faculty.
“The book promotes a continually-appropriate reform model while holding true
to fundamental tenets of our traditional approach to American schooling,”
Brumley said. “I think it is a fair balance between liberal and conservative
ideas about the future of our education system.”
Having been a principal, Brumley views the position as a moral obligation to
fulfill.
“There is an immediate need to provide an adequate education for all
stakeholders, but there is either a positive or negative societal impact
with the long-term outcomes of one’s education.”
Using a combination of theoretical research, practical lessons, and
case story, the book illuminates the possibilities for the school principal
within the reality of today’s accountability era. This book is intended to
enrich the professional views and practice of educators willing to embark on
the journey of its contents, Brumley said.
“The framework of the book presents the need for our school
principals to be selfless over selfish and be a servant to the school’s
purpose and people,” Brumley said. “With this mindset, I walk readers
through important leadership components, such as school vision,
instructional leadership, school management, collaboration, ethics and
political advocacy. Each chapter begins with a real story of a successful
school principal and their application of a leadership standard to real
educational leadership issues and dilemmas.”
The book is available on Amazon.com.
A 2002 Northwestern State graduate, Brumley serves as an adjunct faculty
member at Northwestern State and LSU-Shreveport within their graduate
schools of educational leadership. Previously, Brumley served as principal
of Converse High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in health and human
performance education from Northwestern State, a master’s of education in
school administration from LSU-Shreveport, and a doctorate of education in
leadership from Stephen F. Austin State University. He is also available as
a leadership consultant. For more information, visit

Elderly Man Dies in Ponchatoula Fire
December 27, 2011
Ponchatoula, LA- State Fire Marshal H. “Butch” Browning released information today in reference to a morning home fire that has claimed the life of a Man; his wife escaped the flames.
The Ponchatoula Volunteer Fire Department received a call at 6:53 am that a mobile home was on fire at 700 West McClellan Street lot 27. When firefighters arrived they discovered that the entire structure was on fire. They quickly entered the building and extinguished the fire. They located the body of Herbert Harris (dob. 9-18-46). He was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Harris’s wife was awoken by heavy smoke; she barely escaped injury. Harris was disabled and had limited mobility. There were no working smoke alarms in the home.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is conducting the investigation into this tragic loss. Fire marshal deputies believe the fire origin was in the bathroom at the area of a space heater. The cause of this fire has been determined to be electrical in nature.
Fire Marshal Browning stated, “It was such a sad scene both Mayor Bob Zibbia and Chief of Police Bry Layrisson were on site to ensure that we had full resources to get the family all the answers. If you use space heaters keep a 3 foot area clear of things that will burn and you must have working smoke alarms in your home”.
