House Number Signs‏

September 3, 2010

The Sabine Parish 911 Office is continuing to encourage all Sabine Parish residents to take advantage of their program offering house number signs at a cost of $8.00 each.  The 911 office is assuming half the costs of this sign to make them more affordable to the residents.  These reflective signs will make it easier for emergency personnel to locate their homes.  The vertical signs are green with white reflective lettering that can be seen at night.  Signs are easy to install by pushing the sturdy, steel prongs into the ground.  Signs can be ordered by calling 318 256-0009, or by going to the office located on the 2nd floor of the Sabine Parish Courthouse.

News from Toledo Bend Project Joint Operations‏

September 3, 2010

The Toledo Bend Project Joint Operating Board met today and approved a temporary lake level drawdown as recommended by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for repair and inspection to the soil cement face of the dam.  The recommended drawdown is expected to be to the elevation of 165′ m.s.l., which is 2.58 feet below today’s elevation of 167.58′ m.s.l.  Those areas along the soil cement face that have experienced deterioration due to wave and weather related conditions will be inspected and repaired to ensure the continued stability and reliability of the structure.

The drawdown is expected to begin Friday, September 10, 2010 by generating with both hydroelectric units 24 hours / day / 7 days / week.  Without significant rainfall and inflow, the desired elevation of 165′ m.s.l. should be reached in approximately two weeks.  The amount of time required to accomplish the repairs will depend on how many areas may be identified after the lower lake level is attained.

Since it has been several years since a significant drawdown has occurred, this will be a good time for shoreline owners to inspect and make necessary repairs to boathouses, piers, retaining walls and related structures.  Construction approval applications for this type of activity can be obtained from the Sabine River Authority of Texas (SRA-TX) Toledo Bend Division Office (409-565-2273) for Texas residents or from the Sabine River Authority, State of Louisiana (SRA-LA) Pendleton Office (318-256-4112) for Louisiana residents.

Toledo Bend Project wants to advise everyone that the Antiquities Code of both Texas and Louisiana prohibit digging for or removal of any artifacts such as arrowheads, bones or pottery on public property.  For more information on each State’s code, or to report violators contact either:

Louisiana Div. of Archeology     (225-342-8170) (www.crt.state.la.us/archaeology/legislation/chapter_13.aspx)

Once all the necessary inspection and repairs are made to the dam, the lake will be allowed to return to the regular operating guide as conditions allow.  Future advisories will provide updates on the progress of the repairs.

Sabine Parish Fair Celebrates 100 YearsAccording to John G. Belisle, author of the “History of Sabine Parish, Louisiana” published in 1912 the Sabine Parish Fair Association was organized in 1910.During the early years of operation successful fairs were held in Sabine Parish.  The Fair Board has continued hosting annual festive events, “except for a few years,” during the war.  The organization was compromised of several business men from surrounding communities which included the “Louisiana Long Leaf Lumber Company of Fisher, the Sabine Lumber Company of Zwolle, the Sabine Police Jury and progressive farmers.”Throughout the years this enterprise has maintained the concept of its founding members, which was to develop better farming methods.  The current Management Administration fully supports the mission today, to promote and to stimulate the interest of developing and improving better farming techniques and raising healthy livestock through educational programs such as 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA).  The Sabine Fairs Festival and Rodeo Executive Board consist of Traci Evans, President; Suzette Anderson, Vice President; Sandra White, Secretary; and Eylda G. Thaxton, Business Manager Treasurer.  Past chair members that continue to be involved in promoting the organization’s success are:  Benton Johnson, past chair, Dennis Reeves and Sonny Miller.  Numerous board members, business sponsors, and volunteers through out the years have made it possible to continue with the growth and expansion of our parish annual festival. The Management Administration recognizes the following previous members for their dedicated years of service:   Linda Serbern, Mary Louise Salley, CW Salley, Mary Gregory, Marie Snell, Joe DuBose, Carroll Ellezy, Bobby Salter, Imon Jones, Christie Salley, Penny Cobb, Linda Benton, Wanda Martinez, Sharlee Funderburk, Janet Dowden, Ted Fontenot, Susan Farmer, Sally Northwood, and countless others.  Directors for the Sabine Fair, Festival and Rodeo are as follows:Commercial Building Directors:  Wendell and Lisa HipplerEntertainment Director:  Rodney Hopkins; Gospel night (Wednesday) Buster Jordan Exhibit Building Directors:  Sandra White, Brenda Nash, and Julia CampbellFestival & Public Relations Director: Eylda G.
