Funeral service for, Morris Kay Weldon, 82, of Pitkin, LA will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, July 21, 2014, atSmyrna Baptist Church in Sugartown, LA, with Rev. Frank Ott, Elder Chad Boone and Rev. Tim Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Smyrna Cemetery in Sugartown, LA under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of DeRidder, LA. Morris passed from this life on Friday, July 18, 2014, in DeRidder Retirement and Rehab Center in DeRidder, LA.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2014, beginning at 2:00 PM until 10:00 PM at the church.

Mr. Weldon was born on October 10, 1931, to Joe and Nancy Stracener Weldon in Sugartown, LA, where he lived most of his life. He was formerly employed with Beauregard Electric CO-OP, Inc., Welborn Construction and Kulaga Construction. He had also been employed as a school bus driver for Vernon Parish School Board for thirteen years. He was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent for over fifty years. He was a Mason and member of Sam Todd Lodge #182 in Sugartown, LA for fifty years. Morris was a member of “The Glory Bound Four” quartet. He is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years Patricia Ann Weldon of Pitkin, LA; three sons, Nolen Weldon and wife Kimberly of Cole Central, LA, Shane Weldon and wife Jennifer of Sugartown, and Gregory Corum and wife Julie of Pitkin; two daughters, Judy Weldon and husband Ronald Cooley of DeRidder, LA, and Sis Boone and husband Chad of Hicks, LA; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Jean Cox and Delora Gill of Pitkin, and Elva June Craft of DeQuincy, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Jody Weldon, brothers, Jimmie Joe Weldon and Melvin Weldon, and sister, Doris Mae Slaydon

Funeral services for Janis Marie Knapp, 79, of Leesville, Louisiana will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 18th, at Labby Memorial Funeral Home in Leesville with Rev. Jeff Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 17th, at 5:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Friday, July 18th from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Janis, the daughter of James Arleigh and Maggie Rivers Hicks, Sr., was born August 15, 1934, in Leesville, LA. She passed away at her residence in Leesville, on Tuesday, July 15, 2014.

Mrs. Knapp retired from Civil Service. She was member of First Baptist Church of Leesville and also a member of the Pilot Club of Leesville. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George “Tom” Knapp; brothers, James Arleigh Hicks, Jr. and Richard Melvin Hicks; niece, Becky Hicks Rains and nephew, David Partington.

A memorial service honoring the life of Robert Walter Smith 75, of Many, LA will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Lakeside Baptist Church. Rev. Bill Craft will officiate.

Robert was born on September 2, 1938 in Columbus, LA. He entered into eternal rest at Sabine Medical Center on July 13, 2014.

He was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church, and a member of the Masonic Lodge #236. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp for 21 years until his retirement as a Lt. Colonel.

He was preceded in death by his parents James Pinkney and Mildred Speight Smith; and brother James Wyatt Smith.

 Catherine Andries Rankin
(September 5, 1953 - July 10, 2014)  

Catherine Irene Andries Rankin, Sissy as she was affectionately known, was born on September 5, 1953, in Many, LA. The third child of Harold and Tillie Andries, she attenCatherine Andries Rankinded grade school at St. John the Baptist Catholic School and graduated from Many High School. She received her BS with honors from Northwestern State University in Math and Science Education and an MS as well later in life.

Sissy married Mike Rankin on November 22,1975 and they have three children, Sarah Elizabeth and husband Shane Wright of Many, LA; Amanda Cecile and husband Jason Pfeifer of Lafayette, LA; and Michael Whitby Rankin of Lafayette, LA.

Sissy taught in math and science in both middle and high school. No matter what grade she was teaching, she encouraged her students to reach beyond what they thought was possible. She also believed that each one had the desire and knowledge to achieve their best. Sissy was a devout Catholic and strong in her faith, always involved in the church community.

After an 18 month battle with cancer she passed away on July 10, 2014 at her home in Many, LA. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her granddaughters, Alaina Clair Wright of Many, LA, and Ava Catherine Pfeifer of Lafayette, LA; sisters Mary Beth Tarver, Many, LA; Margaret Preston, Dallas, TX; and Jo Anne Boydstun, Many, LA; brother Bill Andries, Many, LA; mother-in-law Ruth Rankin, Anchorage, AK; sisters-in-law Toni Purcell and Gloria Hoge, Anchorage, AK; brother-in-law Jack Rankin, Lafayette, LA; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at 10:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Many, LA with Father Thomas Elavunkal officiating. She was preceded in death by her son Caleb Lee; mother Earline Teater; grandparents Blair and Martha Teater, James D. Shaw and Maudie Shaw Brown.

Aaron, the son of Thomas Edward and Muriel Morrison Cochran, was born January 7, 1964 in Galveston, TX. He passed away at his residence in Anacoco, Wednesday, July 2nd.

Aaron was a longtime resident of Pasadena, TX area and he also served in the US Army. He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew Christopher Adam Cochran.

He is survived by his brothers; Thomas Eugene and wife Valerie Cochran, Kenneth Theodore and wife Cindy Cochran, Jimmy Robert and wife Bonita Cochran and Terry Wayne Cochran all of Anacoco; 11 nephews and nieces, 17 great nephews and nieces and a host of extended family and friends.

She loved playing bingo and spending time with her grandchildren. She was formerly employed as a route deliverer for the Beauregard Daily News. Catherine was a breast cancer survivor for fourteen years.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Donna Nicole Vidrine and husband Mike of Laurel, MS and Patricia Danielle Noel and husband John of Leesville, LA; brother, William Morrison and wife Connie of DeRidder, LA; father, Charles Ray Hosey of DeRidder, LA and 8 grandchildren. Mandy was born on Friday, February 17, 1956, to Joseph and Nora Fuller Bettis at San Antonio, TX. She lived in the DeRidder area most of her life. She managed Dairy Queen in DeRidder for many years and was also employed by Paige Lee Insurance before her retirement. She was of the Baptist faith.

Floyd, the son of Everett Douglas and Mary Ann Sowell Hunt was born February 22, 1935, in DeRidder, LA. He passed away Sunday, June 29th, in Leesville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Everett Douglas, James Wilmer, Clarence Arthur & Edward L and grandson, Floyd Choyia Hunt, II.

He married at age 20 to his lovely bride Shirley age sixteen. God blessed them with a wonderful supporting son and a great supporting daughter. Mr. Hunt chose to go to night school as a mechanical engineer and worked as a millwright overseeing many jobs in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi refineries. In 1968 he became a millwright business agent in Lake Charles. In 1970 he and his wife developed and became owner of Floyd General Construction Company. His son and daughter helped build the company through the years. Thanks to all the businesses in Rapides, Caddo, Calcasieu, Vernon, Natchitoches, East Baton Rouge, St. Mary’s and all over Louisiana and Texas for their support. Mr. Hunt was a Mason, Shriners and member of First Baptist Church in Leesville. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Hunt of Leesville, LA; son, Choyia & Jan Hunt of Leesville, LA; daughter, Teresa & Tony Houston of Crosby, TX; brother, Johnny Dalton & Lena Hunt of Leesville, LA; grandchildren, Nancy & Blaise Breaux Tammy Nacole & Kurt Saffer, Joshua E. Jeannette Ann Perkins Hicks was born on Saturday, December 25, 1954, to Samuel Leigh and Eulalie (HJeannette Ann Perkins Hicksoover) Perkins. She passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at her residence in DeRidder, LA. Jeannette graduated from Natchitoches Central High School in 1972. She obtained her BS, Med, and Med + 20 from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA. She taught for five years in the Natchitoches Parish and for fifteen years in Beauregard Parish. She also taught several years at Northwestern State University at Fort Polk. Upon her retirement from education, she was employed by Amerisafe, Inc. for fourteen years. Jeannette was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Kisatchie Chapter of DAR. She was actively involved with God’s Food Box until her health declined. She was a member of Delta Mu chapter of Sigma Kappa.

Jeannette is survived by her loving husband of twenty-nine years, Jimmy Hicks, her daughters, Jaime Renee Primm (Chad) Feaster of Lake Charles, LA and Mary Christine Primm (Ken) Lynch of Sulphur, LA. She is also survived by a stepson, Todd Hicks of DeRidder and stepdaughters, Missi (Colby) Kibodeaux of Longville, LA, Laurie (Kevin) Cooley of Beaumont, TX and Amy (Mickey) Atkinson of Dry Creek, LA. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Tara, Kira, and Jack Lynch, Keegan, Paige, Kadee and Preston Feaster and eight step grandchildren, Kelleigh Lynch, Jordan Hicks, Tyler Kibodeaux, Gabe, Kane and Luke Atkinson and Kalei and Dawson Hicks. LaVerne, the daughter of Andrew Jackson and Lola Mires Marze was born July 13, 1927, in Merryville, LA. She passed away Wednesday, June 25th, in Leesville.

Mrs. Crager was a lifetime member of Sunny Hill Baptist Church in Kurthwood, LA. She loved reading her Bible every day, fishing, quilting and gardening. At harvest time she loved to cook very large meals for her family and friends, especially when the vegetables were from her on garden. She was loved by everyone that knew her and her smile will be remembered.

She had five sisters and four brothers. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Tommie W. Prewitt, LeRoy “Pete” Whitman and Alton Ray Crager.

She is survived by her son, Tommie Willis Prewitt & wife, Sharon of Leesville, LA; daughter, Margie A. Wanda was born on Wednesday, November 8, 1939, at Kinder, LA. She lived in Sugartown for the past 25 years. She was a newspaper deliverer for the Beauregard Dailey News and she was the KPLC weather watcher representing Sugartown for many years. She loved animals. Wanda was a wonderful person, wife mother, grandmother.

 Kazuko "Kay" (Sceets) Fugitt
(Died June 21, 2014)

Kazuko "Kay" (Sceets) Fugitt, age 86 years and 10 months, passed her final hurdle to be with the Lord in Heaven on June 21, 2014. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 25 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Labby Memorial Funeral Home in Leesville. Funeral services will be in the Labby Memorial Chapel on Thursday, June 26th, at 2 p.m., followed by burial thereafter at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Leesville. Rev. Edgar Evans will be officiating.

Kay was a rare person who excelled at common hobbies. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and occasional sewing, doing all of them very well.

She was married twice. The first was to George F. Sceets, Sr., for 35 years until he passed away in 1986. The second was to Robert H. Fugitt for the last 25 years.

She is survived by her husband, Robert H. Fugitt; two sons from her first marriage, George F. Sceets Jr. of Baytown, Texas, and Robert W. Sceets of New Llano; three grandchildren, Christine Sceets McWhorter of College Station, Texas, George N. Sceets III of San Antonio, Texas, and James A. Sceets of DeRidder.

She is also survived by step-daughters Julie Roberts and Mayte Johnson of Leesville, and Susan Solley of West Monroe. Friendly to all, gracious in social circles, honest to a fault, and pure of heart, Kay was never heard to have uttered an expletive in either English or Japanese. The standards she lived by served all who knew her as exemplary of a beautiful soul.

Among her proudest moments in self-achievement was studying for and earning her U.S. Citizenship in 1955, raising her two sons, and later working more than 30 years as a successful Accounts Receivable Clerk within the Ft. Polk NAF System. She was very proud of her family and grandchildren.

Tom the son of Rev. W.W. and Minnie Perry Knapp, was born February 18, 1925, in Leesville, LA. He passed away Wednesday, June 18th, in Leesville.

George Thomas “Tom” Knapp loved his church, his family, and his country. Everyone who knew him knew how important these aspects of his life were. Until his health became such that he could no longer attend church, Tom Knapp was at every service ---Sunday morning and night and Wednesday night. He loved teaching the Unity Class and serving as a deacon.

As a husband, father, and grandfather Tom Knapp stood tall. He always put is family’s interest above his own. He lived Christian values as an example for all of us. None of us ever doubted how much he loved us or how very proud he was of us.

Tom Knapp bled red, white, and blue. He believed in giving back to his nation and community and was elected to serve on the Vernon Parish Police Jury. Tom Knapp was a member of “the greatest generation.” He was a World War II Veteran of the South Pacific Campaign. Tom Knapp instilled in us patriotism and to honor those who serve our country.

All of these things and more are true of Tom Knapp. We could go on and on about the many things he accomplished and the lives he touched. However, the one thing Tom Knapp would want said about him is “Tom Knapp was a Christian.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. W.W. and Minnie Perry Knapp and siblings, Pauline Knapp Tibbitts, Walter Knapp, Bill Knapp, and Clifford Knapp.

Funeral services for Margaret Elaine Barton, 57, of New Llano, Louisiana will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2014, at the Labby Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Leesville with Rev. Donny Gene Monk officiating. Burial will follow in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 19th from 5 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., and on Friday, June 20th from 9:00 a.m. until service time in the chapel.

Margaret was born July 30, 1956, in Leesville, LA. She passed away Monday, June 16th, in Alexandria.

Margaret loved the simple things in life and always stood by her word. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mechelle Barton.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, William “Bill” Barton of New Llano, LA; sons, William Dale Barton & wife, Celina of Leesville, LA and Kris Barton & fiancé Kole Caston of Bossier City, LA; daughter, Billye Elaine Ebbesen & husband, David Leesville, LA and brother, Aubrey Willis of Leesville, LA and six grandchildren.

Funeral services for Rev. Douglas Hilton, 60, of Hornbeck, Louisiana will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2014 in the Hornbeck High School Gymnasium with Rev. Douglas HiltonRev’s. Lloyd Carroll and Wilkie Richmond officiating. Burial will follow in the Gum Springs Cemetery under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 15th from 4 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at Gum Springs Baptist Church, and on Monday, June 16th from 9:00 a.m. until service time in the Hornbeck High School Gymnasium.

Douglas the son of Roy and Juanita Ellis Hilton was born on October 10th, 1953 in Leesville, Louisiana. He passed into his eternal home on Thursday, June 12, 2014 in Leesville.

Doug was a 1971 graduate of Hornbeck High School, and a member of the Sons of Confederacy. He had been employed by Valley Electric Company for over 40 years. He was the Pastor of Gum Springs Baptist Church from 1978 until 2011. Doug was an example of a true Christian. Even through his illness he was an inspiration and encouragement to many people. He has fought the good fight, He has finished his course, He has kept the faith, and He has finished well.

Doug is survived by his Wife: Brenda Hilton of Hornbeck, La.; His Children: Jason & Jeanette Hilton of Hornbeck, La., and Amy & Michael Lightsey of Hornbeck, La.; One brother: Nick & Rita Hilton of Hornbeck, La.; One Sister: Vickey & Harry Stevenson of Hornbeck, La.; His Mother: Juanita Hilton of Hornbeck, La.; One Brother-in-law: Steven & Shonda Dowden of Hornbeck, La.; His Grandchildren: Joseph Douglas Hilton, Gavin Michael Lightsey, Justin Noah Lightsey, Ryleigh Samantha Hilton, and One on the way.

He was a graduate of Many High School and Northwestern State University with a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice and political science. He was employed by Alliance Compressors as a procurement analyst.

He was preceded in death by daughter Kaitlin Byles; grandparents Robert and Ann Byles, Albert and Mildred Bell; brother Malcolm Byles, Sr.; nephew Hunter Byles; special friends and mentor Howard Baldwin and Emma Lee Foxx.

He is survived by his wife Nicole Adams Byles of Many, LA; parents Clauriste Byles, Sr. and wife Judy of Many, LA; daughter Cassidy Brooke Byles of Many, LA; sister Nicole Jackson and husband Virgil of Robeline, LA ; brother Clauriste Byles, Jr. and wife Wendy of Many, LA; nieces and nephews Ivy Jackson, Alaina Jackson, Molly Simpson, Malcolm Byles, Jr. and wife Caitlin, Madison Nicole Byles and a host of friends.
